If you take the maybe option they will hang out at that spot until you come back and grab them so I usually will fast travel, drop off my current companion, and then go get the new one. You don't have to pick up new companions as soon as they ask to come with you. Personally I never dismiss a companion to a settlement unless I am in that settlement. I send other companions to different settlements and they arrive there.
